Kuching Cat Museum

When Kuching was incorporated as a city on August 1, 1988, they proclaimed themselves to be a "Cat City". To emphasize this, the Sarawak Museum took over a cat exhibit from the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur, which proved popular. With a growing collection, the exhibit was moved in 1993 from Tun Abdul Razak Hall to the ground floor here at the Kuching North City Hall (Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara) on top of Siol Hill. Today, the Cat Museum spans four galleries covering 1,035.0 square metres that include more than 4,000 cat-related artifacts from all around the world. Most of the collection is pop art, but highlights include a mummified Egyptian cat and the world's only mounted specimen of the extremely rare Borneo Bay Cat (Felis badia). (Brian K. Smith photo.)
