The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, opened to vehicular traffic in November 1936, is the longest steel high-level bridge in the world, consisting of two structures connected by the world's largest single-bore tunnel through Yerba Buena Island. During the Loma Prieta Earthquake on Oct. 17, 1989, one of the bridge spans collapsed.
