Thian Hock Keng Deities
Image# sg002

Although Chinese Buddhist temples are typically dedicated to a single deity — in this case Ma Cho Po, the Mother of Heavenly Sages and Goddess of the Sea — you will also find idols representing other historical or spiritual figures.

It is not surprising that Thian Hock Keng, the most important temple for Singapore's Hokkien community, is dedicated to Ma Cho Po. The Hokkien are known historically as maritime traders, many having migrated from China's Fujian province on the east coast to Southeast Asia.
